While everyone else is performing "perfection"—the manicured picnics, the curated fireworks shots, the forced smiles—we’re showing up to celebrate the mess, the reality, and the honest, beautiful gaps in between.

If you’re a #legend, you don’t need a permit or a polished script to connect. You just need to be real. Here is your playbook for finding authentic peace at public events this holiday.

The #Legend’s Field Guide to Public Connection

1. Reject the Performance

Public events are designed to make you feel like you need to be doing something "right." Ignore that. Find the edges of the crowd. Look for the people who are just as over it as you are—the ones sitting on the grass not watching the show, the ones laughing at the absurdity of the heat or the noise. **That is your tribe.**

2. Use the "Signal Flare"

Connection requires a beacon. If you’re looking for someone to share a moment with, you have to be visible in your imperfection.

* **The Artifact:** Carry something that invites interaction—a physical copy of a zine, a handmade card, or a sign that says something real, not something patriotic.

* **The "Mistake" Opener:** If you drop your drink, trip over a blanket, or lose your spot, don’t hide it. Laugh at yourself openly. When you broadcast your "fuck up," you immediately signal that it’s safe for others to drop their guard too.

3. Practice "Soul Taps" (The Anti-Small-Talk)

Stop asking "How are you?" or "Where are you from?" That’s the script the system wants you to read. Try a **Soul Tap** instead:

* *“I’m really struggling with how loud these fireworks are, but I’m kind of digging the chaos. You?”*

* *“I came here because I didn’t want to be alone, but now I’m wondering why I came at all. Nice to meet you.”*

* **Why it works:** It forces a moment of genuine human acknowledgement. It’s radical honesty in a crowded space.

4. The "Fuck Up" Invite

Don’t plan a perfect date or a formal meeting. Offer an "anti-event" invitation.

* *“I’m going to go find a spot that’s less crowded and probably totally the wrong place to see the fireworks. You want to come get lost with me?”*

Don’t force yourself to meet somewhere at specific time - just focus on showing up.

### Your July 4th Action Plan

1. **The Drop:** Prepare a stack of your "membership cards" or zine snippets. Don't hand them out like flyers—leave them where someone might find them, or tuck them into the hand of someone who looks like they need a reminder that they aren't alone.

2. **The Digital Beacon:** Post an update to your Substack or social channels *before* you head out. Tell people where you’ll be, but define the "meeting point" as something S.O.F.U. adjacent—like "the tree that looks like it’s about to fall" or "the spot with the worst view."

3. **The Mission:** Your goal isn't to network. It is to find one person who feels like an outlier and tell them: *"I see you, and you’re doing great."*

**The bunker is ready.** How are you planning to mark your spot in the crowd this year? Are you taking the zines, the cards, or just your raw, unfiltered self?

This post was generated by AI and edited by #mee.

Stop Trying to Fix Me. a happy one during a sad time - is why I always laugh when I cry—there’s something about humor as a coping mechanism that my family taught me, even when we’re all a bit crazy.

Doctors and therapists think this is me being “manic” when it happens at the psych ward, but it’s really just my natural baseline of self soothing and coping. Not one therapist has ever asked my “why are you laughing?” It’s always the other patients locked up there with me that “get it”.

Some of the best times of my life have been those moments: crying uncontrollably with someone else until we’re both laughing at the end. That transition from total collapse to shared, hysterical relief is pure connection.

True love is just showing up when the world is burning. It’s sitting in the dirt with a kid who is crying and saying, "I’m here. This is awful. You don’t have to be anything but exactly what you are right now."

That’s why I’m a S.O.F.U. member. We’re done with the "fix-it" culture. We’re here for the real, the messy, and the beautifully human—this is why I look for something funny anytime it hurts.

#SocietyOfTheFuckUps #RadicalAcceptance #BeRealNotPerfect

Local Circles: How to Run a Safe SOFU Meetup

Want to host a Society of the Fuck Ups Meeting? If you want to start a local meetup or a gathering in your hometown, you don’t need to ask for a permission slip—you just go do it.

A leaderless setup only survives if every member takes personal responsibility for protecting the safety of the circle. We want these gatherings to be grounding, honest, and completely safe sanctuaries.

To help ensure your local circle remains a secure spot to drop the mask, follow these five essential guidelines:

1. 📍 Keep it Small and Public

When starting out—especially if you are inviting people you connected with through independent digital channels—always pick a well-lit, public space. A quiet corner of a public library, a casual local park, or a public square is much safer than private residences.

Keeping your local groups small (a few people sitting on a lawn or around a table) is always better and more meaningful than a giant, unmanageable crowd.

2. 🤫 Strict Confidentiality

The absolute rule of any S.O.F.U. meeting is that whatever is said in the circle stays entirely in the circle. People need to know they can talk about life’s actual messes without their stories being leaked. Do not take group photos or post snapshots to social media unless every single attendee explicitly and actively consents to it. Protect each other’s privacy fiercely.

3. 🙅‍♂️ Focus on Sharing, Not Debating

Your local gather-ups should be an oasis from the noise of the world. Keep politics, religion, and societal debates completely out of the space. If a person enters a circle trying to argue, judge others over external beliefs, or enforce their own rigid worldview, they are missing the point of the movement. S.O.F.U. is about connecting over our shared human struggles, period.

4. 🚫 No Drugs or Alcohol

To maintain a safe, clear-headed, and grounded environment for everyone—especially members who are actively dealing with addiction or trauma recovery—all meetups must be completely substance-free. Avoid organizing circles at bars or places centered around substances. Keep it to coffee shops, parks, public halls, or art spaces.

5. 🎨 Try to Have Fun

S.O.F.U. meetups aren’t clinical group therapy sessions—we aren’t licensed doctors and we don’t pretend to be. These spaces are about building mutual understanding over our beautifully messed-up realities. Listen to music, trade zines or art projects, play board games, or try a creative craft together. It is completely fine to laugh, create, and be happy as a fuck-up.

S.O.F.U. S.O.F.U. is the exact opposite. We are an old-school, real-world collective. The digital side of this publication exists purely as a baseline station and to share community in real-time—the real work happens out there, on the streets, in your neighborhood, and in the wild.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to represent or grow this movement. Since our logo packs and printable membership cards are completely open-source and free to the public, the tools are already in your hands.

If you are looking for ways to drop your mask, break the ice, or find fellow misfits, here is your field guide to real-world action.

The “Hidden Drops” Strategy

One of the coolest ways to spread the message is to leave quiet anomalies behind for people to discover by accident. It’s like a message in a bottle for someone who might be having the worst day of their life.

Book Art: Print out a batch of our standard membership cards, sign a brief message of uplifting solidarity on the back, make your own ATCs and slide them into random library books, thrift store novels, or magazines at a doctor’s office. Heck, you can even write in an old book itself and leave it somewhere.

Park Bench Art: Use the open-source SVG logos to create physical tokens. Paint a rock, write a quick, raw note of comfort on a small card, or fold a tiny booklet. Leave it on a bus seat, a park bench, or a coffee shop bulletin board.

The Golden Rule: Keep it clean and don’t litter. The goal is to leave an intentional gift or resource for someone to stumble upon, not to make a mess or jeopardize wildlife.

🎨 Wear the Uniform (DIY Style)

We don’t sell official, mass-produced corporate merchandise. We want you to build your own gear, support local print shops, or thrift your base materials. Using the free logo design pack, you can stamp the S.O.F.U. flag on whatever you wear. You also have the total freedom to design your own artwork.

Patches & Stencils: Print a logo on thick paper, cut out the black lines with an X-Acto knife, and create a reusable stencil. Use fabric paint to ink the logo onto a denim jacket, a canvas bag, or a backpack patch.

Custom Printing & Pressing: Take the high-resolution files to a local shop to print stickers, or drop the SVG into a DIY screen-printing or heat-press setup at home to ink your own t-shirts and hoodies.

Write on a plain t-shirt in Sharpie Marker: This is cheap and easy and most accessible for all!

When you wear the logo in public, it acts as a quiet beacon. It gives a nod to fellow members passing by and lets people know you are a safe person who rejects the standard corporate performance.

🗣️ Connections by Happenstance

You don’t need to organize a giant rally to build community. True, battle-tested connection usually happens entirely by accident when people drop their guards.
Mention the Society of the Fuck Ups casually in conversation when people are talking about how stressful or heavy life is.

When someone admits they are struggling, telling them, “Hey, you’d fit right into the club I’m in,” breaks the ice instantly. But if we’re going to build a real-world community of misfits without corporate algorithms or over-sanitized filters, we need a clear understanding of how we treat each other.

The public internet is full of rules designed to protect corporate advertisers and keep people smiling. We don’t care about advertisers, but we care deeply about protecting this space. Our code of conduct isn’t about being polite—it’s about basic human decency, radical honesty, and keeping the tourists out.

Here are the rules of engagement:

🚫 Listen Without Fixing

When someone in our community stands up and says, “Everything is a total disaster today and I am drowning,” the automatic human reaction is usually to try and throw them a line. We want to offer a five-step plan, recommend a self-help book, or share a routine that helped us get our life together.

Don’t do that here. Around here, we do not hand out unsolicited advice or try to patch up each other’s cracks. When someone is hurting, your only job is to listen. Let them sit in the mess. Let them feel exactly what they are feeling without looking across the room and trying to play the hero. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can say to someone in the trenches is simply: “Yeah, that sounds like a complete nightmare. I hear you.”

🖤 The Anti-Toxic Positivity Rule

If you want to tell people to “look on the bright side,” “manifest good vibes,” or remember that “everything happens for a reason,” there are millions of other blogs, wellness apps, and social media feeds waiting for you.

S.O.F.U. is an active dead-zone for toxic positivity.

Sometimes there is no bright side. Sometimes a situation is just completely fucked, your brain is working against you, a family member is being toxic, or life has thrown you a beating that you didn’t deserve. Your only path is radical acceptance.

We don’t demand silver linings here. There is immense, freeing peace in just telling the unedited truth: “I am not okay right now, and things are a mess.” You never have to put on a performance or wear a fake smile inside these walls.

🤪 Bring Your Real, Unfiltered Self

Standard social media platforms force you to censor your life to fit their community guidelines. They want the sanitized version of “mental health awareness”—the kind wrapped in neat little educational graphics.

Society of Fuck-Ups is different. We want your actual reality. This is your explicit permission slip to talk about the heavy, messy, unfiltered trenches. If you have been in a psych unit for a med tune-up, if you have survived abuse, if you are dealing with toxic family dynamics, or if you’ve watched your closest friends catch drug charges or go to jail—you can speak plainly about it here. No eggshells. No censorship.

The only boundary is safety: bring your raw truths, but never weaponize them to threaten, discriminate, hate on a specific class of people, or harm others. We accept your vulnerability and your struggles, but we protect our members fiercely.

🥳 It’s Okay to Have Fun

Just because we don’t hide from life’s heavy disasters doesn’t mean this is a club of perpetual torment. S.O.F.U. is a space to breathe, laugh, and find real-world connection. It is entirely okay to be a fuck-up and still build things, listen to music, share your art, and live a happy, meaningful life. We’re navigating a beautiful mess together—might as well have some fun with it along the way.

Browse the Rest of the the S.O.F.U. pack to make your own artwork - some ideas of what you can do with these:

Use as a Press Pack for your own blog/website/print publication.

Print stickers or patches: Drop an SVG into a sticker-printing site or a local print shop to make gear for your laptop, water bottle, or denim jacket.

Make stencils for art: Print a logo out on thick paper, cut out the black lines with an X-Acto knife, and use it to chalk the pavement or paint a canvas bag.

Design custom wallpapers: Slap your favorite design onto a dark background for an easy phone or desktop background to remind you where you stand.

Screenprint your own shirts: Burn a design onto a DIY screen-printing mesh frame and ink it onto old thrifted t-shirts or hoodies. Or, if you have a heat press you could do that!

Hidden drops: Print out a batch of cards or make art, sign the back with a message of uplifting solidarity, and tuck them into old books or leave them on bulletin boards for the next misfit to find. (Just don’t litter!)

Who Society of the Fuck-Ups is For

We accept vulnerability, struggle, and life’s messes, but let this be completely, unapologetically clear: we do not harbor harm. This movement is a safe sanctuary for people who can relate to being fucked up, not a hiding place for monsters.

There is a strict zero-tolerance policy for harm. We protect our members fiercely. No abusers, violent criminals, or predators are allowed under any circumstances—if you harm children, commit acts of violence, practice hate speech or discrimination towards any specific class or abuse others, you are completely barred from this movement and do not belong here, period.

Our baseline code of conduct requires that you treat people with basic respect and do no more damage. S.O.F.U. is a decentralized space where you can bring your true, raw, imperfect self, but the second someone exploits that openness to prey on or threaten the safety of others, you are no longer welcome here.

Show Us Your Cards & Gear

We want to see how you are bringing S.O.F.U. into the real world. If you designed your own custom membership card, scribbled one on a napkin, or used the logo packs to make something wild, take a picture and share it!

Paid subscribers can drop images directly in the comments below or share them in our private community chat space. Don’t be shy, we’re probably going to love what you create!

Read All Posts in the Welcome Packet

How to Become a Member (Current Post)

Code of Conduct: Support Without Fixing

Spreading the Movement: Getting Involved in the Wild

Local Circles: How to Run a Safe Meetup

Society of the Fuck Ups is a reader-supported publication.
