Manifesto

The Manifesto: Society of the Fuck Ups (S.O.F.U.)

We are a leaderless community of misfits, where everyone belongs because we all struggle. Our society exists to help us find connection in the real world to live a happy life after disaster.

# Chapter 1: The Core Message

Life can be very hard.

Society tells you that you need to fix yourself. It tells you to be positive all the time. It tells you to smile and pretend everything is okay.

That is a lie.

Being screwed up is not a failure. It is just a state of being. It is where you are right now. It does not mean you are bad. It just means you are human.

Imagine how good it feels to say these words out loud:

There is peace in that truth. You do not have to fix it this very second. You just have to breathe. Around here, you are allowed to be exactly as you are. No judgment. No fake smiles. Everyone has a story, and everyone belongs.

If you’ve ever felt a little fucked up or that you don’t fit in, you’re welcome here.

# Chapter 2: Member Code of Conduct

Becoming a member is easy. There are no sign-up forms. There are no dues. If you feel like a member, you are a member.

Want a membership card? We highly recommend you design your own! Cut it to size and decorate as you like! You can alternatively print an AI generated template here. It’s not the best quality, but it IS a 3 pack so you can even recruit some friends.

Hard Safeguards: Who This Club Is NOT For

We accept vulnerability, struggle, and life’s messes. But let this be completely clear: we do not harbor harm.

This movement is a safe sanctuary for people who can relate to being fucked up, not a hiding place for monsters.

No abusers, violent criminals, or predators allowed! If you harm children, commit acts of violence, or abuse others, you are completely barred from this movement. You do not belong here.

Code of Conduct

Our member code of conduct is based on basic respect and mutual understanding. To keep this space safe for everyone, we have a simple code of conduct and 2 very basic rules.

  • Listen without fixing: When someone says they are hurting, do not try to give them a five-step plan to fix it. Just listen. Let them feel what they feel.
  • No toxic positivity: Do not tell people to “look on the bright side.” Sometimes there is no bright side. That is okay.
  • No judgment: Everyone’s struggle looks different. Do not judge how someone else copes with their pain.
  • Be real: Bring your true, raw self. We do not need a fake version of you. We want the real you.
  • It’s okay to have fun: This is not a club of perpetual torment. It’s totally okay to be happy as a fuck-up!

# Chapter 3: How to Get Involved

This is an old-school, real-world movement. We do not want you staring at a screen all day. We want you to spread the idea in the wild.

Here are some ideas for how you can get involved:

  • Make art and leave it behind: Paint a rock. Write a short note of comfort on a piece of paper. Fold up a little booklet. Leave it on a park bench, in a library book, or on a bus seat. Let someone else find it by accident.
  • Wear the “uniform”: Make your own shirts, hats, bags, patches, jewelry or keychains. Totally optional, but a great way to connect to other members in passing.
  • Meet other members by happenstance: If you mention Society of the Fuckups, you might just meet some new members (or invite some new friends to join the club!)

These are just some ideas, there are no hard fast rules. Have fun with it! Be Creative as you like!

# Chapter 4: Leadership Structure

Leadership

This is a leaderless organization. There are no headquarters. There is no president. No one “owns” Society of the Fuckups. If you want to start a local group in your hometown, go do it. You do not need permission.

Tips to Keep Your Local Group Safe:

  1. Keep it small: A few people sitting in a library or a quiet park is better than a giant, chaotic crowd. Well-lit public places are always recommended if you are opening the invite to strangers from the internet.
  2. Keep it private: Anything said during a meet-up should be done in confidence and remain private unless all attendees consent to sharing. Don’t take a big group photo and post to social media for example unless all parties consent.
  3. Focus on sharing, not debating: Your meetings should be a place to share stories and art or music, not to argue about politics or rules. In fact, keep politics completely out of it. If you judge someone based on politics or religion or other things, you should not be an organizer and meetups are probably not right for you.
  4. Try to Have Fun: Society of the Fuck Up Meetups aren’t meant to be group therapy. They’re about making connections with others over a mutually understood state of fucked-up-ness. Play board games, listen to music, create something crafty together. The sky’s the limit!
  5. No drugs or alcohol at meetups: This helps ensure a safe environment for all. Avoid arranging gatherings at a bar.

The Only Rules

There are only 3 strict rules in this entire movement:

  1. Do No Harm: We are here to support each other, not cause more damage. Treat people with basic human decency. If you are hurting others, you are not part of the club.
  2. You cannot trademark “Society of the Fuck Ups”: No one person owns this name. No company can buy it. It belongs to all of us. It belongs to every single member equally. If you try to lock it down or profit off the name alone, you are out. The moment we try to control it, it dies.
  3. Keep it wild. Keep it free. No one can control Society of the Fuckups. You can make it whatever you want it to be.
